Bus stops along public transportation corridors are seldom more than esoteric shelters quite distinct from the geography upon they reside. However, as important nodes, they have the potential to better reflect the culture and people of the place.
Interpretative themes and artist guidelines were created along the City of Providence’s emerging rapid bus line (R-Line). The themes reflect and reinforce each corridor’s unique design and cultural heritage, providing a sense of orientation that connects people. A balance was sought between transit and wayfinding, advertising space and arts and culture.
Artist Guidelines allowed for interpretation of the corridor themes. After an analysis of shelter components (ground plane, roof, columns, etc.) the rear vertical surface enclosure was selected as the “canvas” for artist/fabrication teams. A total of seventeen sites along two rapid bus routes received art installations as a result of the program and call for art. Stipends were awarded to selected teams for the concept, fabrication, and installation of the bus shelter elements.
