The Longwood Medical Area (LMA) in Boston is one of the largest concentrations of medical institutions in the country. Comprised of 22 partner organizations on 213 acres, the institutional and cultural district is constrained geographically by dense residential neighborhoods, commercial corridors and the historic Olmsted Park system. Vehicular congestion is common with nearly 60,000 employees and 29,000 students with limited public transit options.
In an effort to relieve congestion and improve mobility, a series of short, medium and long-term transportation initiatives are advanced to improve inter- and intra-institutional connectivity. Distinct institutional corridors are linked and rebranded as a continuous concourse level for patients and staff, augmented by dedicated bus lanes at street level and future light rail linkages below grade.
Bus rapid transit improvements have been implemented along specific corridors helping to relieve traffic concentrations.
