The implosion of the mid-20th century Capital Plaza replaced a previous minority-majority neighborhood. The mega-structure’s removal represents a unique opportunity to repair the neighborhood fabric and reintroduce mixed-use block patterns. A prevalence of one-way streets currently limit access downtown and to the Kentucky River.
OUR RESPONSE
Reactivating abandoned bridges, connecting trails and reintroducing the street grid reorients downtown towards the river and strengthens Frankfort’s identity for tourism, commerce and recreation.
The Results
Nearly a dozen new buildings are being adaptively reused downtown and new construction is infilling vacant parcels. Street conversion is underway.
