Many New England towns have a central gathering spot. Despite Dedham’s impressive collection of historic buildings, the Town lacks a central public gathering space. When the town constructed a new Public Safety Building, it rendered the 1962 police station obsolete. Community opinions varied widely about what should occupy the site.
OUR RESPONSE
An open space emerged as the preferred option. A civic-scaled loggia screens an adjacent utility building, providing space for small-scale commercial activity for community needs.
The Results
A Request for Proposals has been prepared to transform the underutilized site into a new municipal open space for the community.
