Thursday, July 18 marked the official ribbon-cutting for Lock Nine Park in Piqua, Ohio! The three-acre riverfront park excavates a 19th century lock which had been buried below ground for over a century. Part of the Miami and Erie Canal, the trail passage forms a new connection between downtown and the Great Miami River. A performance pavilion anchors the space bookended by three tree groves and an interactive water feature recalls the canal’s raceway.

The public realm investment has already spurred private-sector development. Gamble Associates adaptively reused a former granite tombstone business overlooking the park into a micro-brewery. Opened in 2023, Crooked Handle Brewery now has a new front door.

We truly enjoyed working with the whole Lock Nine development team:
- ATCS Inc: contractor
- ChoiceOne Engineering: civil engineering
- Booker Design Collaborative: landscape architect
- RSE Associates: structural design
- omloop: signage and wayfinding
- Available Light: lighting design
- Robert Pass Associates: cost estimating
- LandscapeStructures: water feature consultant
We want to extend a special thank you to the City of Piqua the entire community for your support.
